Shields Says Cruise Has Apologized

Brooke Shields says Tom Cruise has apologized for publicly criticizing her use of antidepressants after the birth of her first daughter.
The two had a public beef last year after the "Mission: Impossible III" star, echoing the position of Scientology, said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show that depression can be treated with exercise and vitamins rather than drugs.
The 41-year-old actress says Cruise apologized in person Thursday.
"He came over to my house, and he gave me a heartfelt apology," Shields said Friday during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." "And he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened.
"And through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was. And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."
ADVERTISEMENT Cruise's spokesman confirmed the celebrities made up.
"It is true that his friendship with Ms. Shields has been mended," spokesman Arnold Robinson said in a statement. "He has not changed his position about antidepressants, which as evidenced by the black label warnings issued by the FDA on these types of drugs, are unhealthy."
Shields, who wrote "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression," has dismissed the actor's remarks as a "ridiculous rant" and "a disservice to mothers everywhere."

Actor Glenn Ford dies at 90

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Glenn Ford, a handsome and quiet character actor who made his mark in big films like "Gilda" and "The Big Heat," died on Wednesday in his Beverly Hills home, police said. He was 90.
The Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement that paramedics were called to Ford's home in the afternoon and found the actor dead.
The cause of his death was not immediately known.
The Canadian-born actor, who starred in five movies with Rita Hayworth, never quite attained the superstar status he sought, but nevertheless won the hearts of moviegoers in a variety of roles.
Many critics thought he was underrated and one, David Shipmann, wrote, "He is a good -- if not the best -- example of that second-string group, the dependable and efficient actor."
Ford made low-key appearances in more than 200 movies, and became one of the most enduring stars of the silver screen.
Away from the cameras, Ford led an intensely private life, shunning nightspots in favor of a quiet home life. He was set to make his first public appearance in 15 years at a 90th birthday tribute in Hollywood four months ago, but was unable to attend because of ill health. In his place, former co-stars such as Debbie Reynolds and Martin Landau sang his praises.
Although most frequently appearing in Westerns, Ford played a variety of quietly intense heroes and villains and is best remembered for his non-Western roles.
His career began in 1939 and was highlighted by starring roles in director Fritz Lang's "The Big Heat" in 1953, in which he played a cop out to avenge his wife's murder; Richard Brooks' "The Blackboard Jungle" in 1955, in which he played a teacher; and "The Teahouse of the August Moon" in 1956, in which he played a U.S. soldier in Japan.
After his first movie, "Heaven With a Barbed Wire Fence," Ford made a number of low-budget dramas before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942.
After returning from World War Two, he starred in his first big budget film, the romance "Gilda," with Hayworth in 1946. The movie was a hit and Bette Davis confirmed his leading-man status by picking him to star with her in "A Stolen Life," released the same year.
Ford teamed with Hayworth again for "The Loves of Carmen" (1948) and "Affair in Trinidad" (1958) and played one of his best villains, a sadistic lawman, in "The Man From Colorado"
(1948).

Tom Cruise Canned From Paramount

Sumner Redstone, chief honcho at Viacom, the parent company of Paramount, has ended the 14-year relationship with Cruise's production company, Cruise/Wagner Productions. According to The Wall Street Journal, Redstone cited Cruise's controversial conduct and behavior over the last year as the reason for the split.
Redstone reportedly believed Cruise's antics -- including his now infamous appearances on "Oprah" and "Today" -- had a negative impact on the bottom line for "Mission Impossible III." Redstone said, "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal." Redstone told The Wall Street Journal: "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."
Cruise/Wagner produced a string of hits for Paramount, including "Top Gun," "Mission Impossible" and "Days of Thunder."
UPDATE: Paula Wagner, Cruise's producing partner, responded angrily, claiming Redstone's comments were "outrageous and disrespectful." Wagner noted that her collaboration with Cruise has accounted for 15% of Paramount's theatrical revenues over the last decade. Wagner added that she and Cruise broke off negotiations with Paramount within the last few days. Finally, Wagner said her company has raised "a revolving fund of $100 million" from two hedge funds and that they will be making movies in the future.

Beyonce('s Dad) Responds To Petition

Over 6,600 Beyoncé enthusiasts have come together to sign a petition "for the advocacy of having Ms. Beyoncé Knowles, Columbia Records, Music World Entertainment, and all other entities associated with the creative process of creating the long-form music video known as 'Deja Vu' reshoot aforementioned video immediately."
If you think Miss Knowles has a problem when a couple thousand of her "Crazy in Love" loyalists sign a statement like "this video is an underwhelming representation of the talent and quality of previous music video projects of Ms. Knowles" then you don't know her father, co-founder of imanipulatemybeautifuldaughterformyownsuccess.com (along side of Joe Simpson), Matthew Knowles.
When Papa Knowles heard that the previously mentioned petition made national headlines, he did what any good irreverant celebrity father would do ... he put out an offical "statement".
"It is apparent that there is a consistent plan by some to create chaos around Beyoncés 'B'Day' album release on September 5 in the US. First, it was a petition against the single, 'Deja Vu,' then a rumor regarding conflict between Beyoncé and Rihanna, seizures caused by the 'Ring the Alarm' video, putting out a single to compete with LeToya's album and now to add to all the ridiculous rumors, is my plan to postpone the release of her 'B'Day' album. What will be next? Beyoncé's cut off all her hair? Dyed it green? Maybe she's singing the songs in reverse with some hidden subliminal message!"

Ashlee Simpson Slams Magazine Editor for Seeking Publicity

Ashlee simpson has hit back at the editor of Marie Claire magazine after a backlash by the publication's readers. Simpson upset readers when she enthused about accepting your body flaws only weeks before undergoing a rhinoplasty operation on her nose.
In the July issue of the mag, Simpson says, "Everyone is made differently, and that's what makes us beautiful and unique. I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident."
Over 1,000 readers complained to the magazine, which has recently been taken over from the editor at the time of Simpson's interview, Lesley Jane Seymour, by Joanna Coles.
Coles writes in the September issue, "She was quoting chapter and verse about how crucial it is to love yourself as you are, etc. We're dazed and confused - and disappointed - by her choice too."
In response, Simpson's publicist Rob Shuter tells MTV News, "I'm sorry the new editor is using Ashlee to get publicity for her magazine."

Scientology Helps Drug Addicts, Says Penelope Cruz

Panelope Cruz has praised her ex-boyfriend Tom Cruise's controversial Scientology religion for helping "thousands" of drug addicts find sobriety. Narconon, an in-patient rehabilitation program for drug abusers based on a doctrine by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, claim to have a success rate of 70 percent, although an independent Swedish research study found such rates as low as 6.6 percent.
During her two-and-a-half year relationship with her Vanilla Sky co-star, Cruz read many books on the religion, of which Cruise is a devout follower.
She explains, "I have read a lot of books about it and some of those things I have studied have helped me with things in my life. I would feel bad with myself if I didn't say that I was grateful to it because of what I learned about it.
"A lot of my friends have been helped by their program - they have the most successful anti-drug problem in the world and they deserve a lot of credit for it. They have places everywhere. It is amazing because it is about helping the person find the reason why they started in the beginning instead of creating guilt."
Cruise claims to have helped dozens of people conquer their drug addictions through Scientology programs, saying, "I think it's appalling that people have to live a life of drug addiction when I have personally helped people get off drugs... I have an easier time stepping people off heroin then I do these psychotropic drugs."

Nick: Brains Over Blonde?

Is nice guy Nick Lachey sweet-talking girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo by bad-mouthing ex-wife Jessica Simpson? That's the accusation being leveled by Us Weekly, which claims the "What's Left of Me" warbler is totally turned on by the novelty of his current squeeze's bodacious brain.
"Nick keeps telling Vanessa the difference between her and Jessica is that she is extremely intelligent," a "Minnillo pal" tartly informs the magazine.
Ouch.
(In Jessica's defense, her mom has claimed she actually has a genius-level 160 IQ, which adds a whole scientific level to that chicken-or-fish debate.)
According to the mag, the MTV talking head -- and sometime Lachey lapdancer -- has several other qualities that make her the Bizarro Jessica, including her enthusiasm for typically testosterone-fueled pursuits.
"She's a guys' girl," says another source. "Jessica was always about going somewhere that was a scene with a big entourage. Vanessa can play darts and chill."
Minnillo, who previously dated Derek Jeter, is also "an avid sports fan," enthuses another insider, with a Lachey confidante adding, "Nick commented on his love for [his hometown NFL team] the Cincinnati Bengals and Vanessa blew him away by running off the team's poor stats. He tells friends, 'It's like talking to your best guy friend, but she's a smoking-hot chick.'"
Not to be left out of the La-Nessa love parade, Life & Style ups the ante by positing that Lachey, who officially reclaimed his single status less than two months ago, is eager to reclaim his newlywed status.
"He told Vanessa that his goal was to get remarried and start a family," a mole alleges to the mag, adding that "he didn't want to continue seeing her unless she was serious about their relationship."
But the source says Vanessa "is all for it. She's eager to be married as well."
As for Jessica, she's opening up about the musical epiphany she experienced in the midst of their tabloid-dissected divorce, revealing to MTV News that last Christmas, she played sister Ashlee a ditty that held deep, personal meaning for her: Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly," which, conveniently enough, closes out her upcoming release, "A Public Affair."
"We laid there listening to the song and just cried and cried like babies," Jess fesses up. "In a lot of ways, my sister really gave me the strength to pull through this really hard time. And it was just laying there and being with her that got me through it. I knew everything would be OK."
Simpson says "the song is about how sometimes you just have to know when to let something go. And that was that moment. And I had to sing it."
Meanwhile, is Jessica looking to prove she's "got a mind for business and a bod for sin," not to mention the acting chops and audience appeal to carry an entire movie?
The New York Daily News reports Simpson is mulling over whether to star in an update of 1988's "Working Girl," which earned Melanie Griffith an Oscar nod for playing a big-haired, baby-voiced secretary with executive-level dreams.
Confirms her flack to the paper, "It is one of the scripts Jessica is considering."

Duff's Immaculate Perception

Hilary Duff is attempting to distance herself from claims she's been a very good girl during her two-year romance with Joel Madden.
"It's hard having a boyfriend who's older because people just assume," the slimmed-down, shiny-toothed starlet, 18, was recently quoted as telling Elle of the 27-year-old Good Charlotte frontman. "But [virginity] is definitely something I like about myself."
But the Duffster, whose mom described her as a "very chaste young woman" in the same article, denies she ever discussed anything as personal as her virtue -- and, by extension, her ink-stained beau's seemingly preternatural patience -- during the tête-à-tête.
"The thing is that I didn't say that," she asserts to MuchMusic. "I wouldn't say that. I don't know how [the writer] got that out of what I said."
According to Hilary, it's "definitely not something that I would talk about or that I would want people to focus on. Or that I even think it's appropriate to talk about."
Besides, she bristles, "Whose business is that?"
During the sit-down, Duff was also quoted as revealing her deep thoughts on doing it, saying, "It doesn't mean I haven't thought about sex, because everybody I know has had it and you want to fit in. But when they talk about it, it doesn't sound special, like you would imagine it to be."

Lance and Reichen on the Rocks?

Looks like Lance Bass' coming out has been given the unofficial tabloid seal of approval. Just days after the erstwhile 'NSYNC-er revealed his "very stable" relationship with reality show winner-cum-model-actor Reichen Lehmkuhl in his People cover story, the breakup rumors have begun, courtesy of the New York Post, which predicts they won't "be together much longer."
"Reichen forced Lance to come out just at the same time he has a book coming out so he could ride the publicity wave," a mole alleges to the paper. "He is a big gay activist and very controlling. He wants Lance to give up his straight friends and do whatever he tells him to."
Reichen, whose upcoming memoir is titled, "Here's What We'll Say: A Memoir of Growing Up, Coming Out, and the U.S. Air Force," has been making the media rounds to talk about Bass, whom he's been dating for a few months.
"I will say that Lance is happier than he has ever been," he tells "Access Hollywood. "It has been a long ride and it's a huge relief and I couldn't be happier for him and I couldn't be more proud of him."
He adds to "The Insider," "I'm happy it's shocking people ... I couldn't be more proud of Lance. It's definitely a sense of relief. There are a lot more smiles. We are so happy about it."
And in still another sit-down, this one with "Entertainment Tonight," he gushes, "I support Lance wholeheartedly. I couldn't be more proud of what he's doing."
Bass' overworked rep is sidestepping the split chatter, telling the Post, "Lance couldn't be happier with the overwhelming reaction he's getting from all over the world."

Aishwarya Rai Made to Lose Weight

The Associated Press
NEW DELHI -- It's been an up and down time for Bollywood mega star Aishwarya Rai lately — weight wise, that is. Her directors, not satisfied with having Bollywood's leading lady in their films, have made her lose weight, gain weight and lose it again for successive films, the Times of India newspaper reported Thursday.
Most recently Rai, a former Miss World often labeled as one of the world's most beautiful women, was asked to shed a few pounds for her role in the film "Dhoom 2," or "Big Bang 2," which is being shot in Namibia, the paper reported.
Rai's personal trainer Deepika is on sight leading "Ash," as she is known in Bollywood, through a two-hour workout starting at 4 a.m. every morning, the paper said.
"Deepika is with Ash in Namibia," Rai's manager Hari Singh told the newspaper. "Ash is a very dedicated actress and she is working to get into the skin of her role."
Rai had picked up some extra pounds for her role in the film "Guru," which she was filming before heading to Namibia for "Dhoom 2 ."

Ex-Savage Garden Singer Marries Partner

Considering from The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Darren Hayes of the defunct Australian pop duo Savage Garden says he is finally "secure and content" — and married.
Hayes broke the news this week in an entry on his Web site that began: "I very rarely make comments about my private life."
He then announced that he had married his boyfriend of two years, Richard Cullen, in a civil partnership ceremony in London on June 19.
The 34-year-old singer-songwriter said it was the most significant event of his life.
Hayes said he feels lucky to live in an era that recognizes gay marriage. "I'm proud of who I am, and after what felt like an eternity, I'm finally in a place where my heart is secure and content. And I can finally make sense of all of the searching."
He told fans not to expect updates because he still believes "that families and relationships are not commodities to be sold off for public consumption."
Hayes was briefly married in the late 1990s.
He is about to begin a six-month stint in a London studio to record his third solo album.
Hayes and Daniel Jones formed Savage Garden in 1994. The duo, known for their hits "I Want You" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply," disbanded in 2001.

Carrey and McCarthy Engaged?

Are Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy ready to commit to a lifetime of funny faces and fart jokes? A couple of tabloids are convinced a sure-to-be uproarious aisle-walk is in the goofy duo's future, a claim they're adamantly denying.
"He's finally found his soulmate," a "friend" of the A-list yukster tells In Touch. "She's his fantasy woman."
The mag claims Carrey, who has admitted only that he's "seeing somebody who's very cool," has recently been spied eyeballing rings at Tiffany in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The National Enquirer, meanwhile, claims Jim, 44, and Jenny, 33, who were first linked back in September but only recently went public with their romance (and by "public," we mean paparazzi snapped them spit-shining each other's tonsils and hugging surfside), may be planning a quick and quiet elopement to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, over Labor Day weekend.
While the rubber-faced funnyman is no stranger to surreptitious nuptials -- he wed wife No. 2 Lauren Holly on a Malibu, Calif., cliff in 1996 with just her brother and his daughter as witnesses -- reps for both are quick to dismiss the question-popping talk.
"They are not engaged," Carrey's rep insists to MSN Entertainment. "It's a rumor."
McCarthy, who filed for divorce from director John Asher in August 2005, echoes that sentiment, with her mouthpiece succinctly telling us, "They are not engaged."

Oprah Says She and Friend Not Gay

Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle King want to be clear: they're not gay.
In the August issue of O, the Oprah Magazine, the talk-show host explains that some people misunderstand her close friendship with King.
"I understand why people think we're gay," she says. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it — how can you be this close without it being sexual?"
In a long article, Winfrey, 52, and King converse about their 30 years of friendship and "four-times-a-day phone calls." King, who hosted "The Gayle King Show" in 1997, is an editor of O, the Oprah Magazine.
The two friends say they would have no problem telling the public if they were in a sexual relationship.
"The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay," says King.
Says Winfrey: "Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and a hand greater than my own. Whatever this friendship is, it's been a very fun ride."

Avril Lavigne Marries Sum 41 Frontman

The Associated Press
Avril Lavigne has married a fellow Canadian musician.
Lavigne married Deryck Whibley, guitarist and frontman for Sum 41, on Saturday, at a private estate near Santa Barbara, People magazine reported on its Web site.
The young rockers had a mostly traditional ceremony, the magazine said.
Lavigne wore a Vera Wang gown, carried white roses and was walked down the aisle by her father as Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" played.
Lavigne, 21, and Whibley, 26, exchanged vows under an awning covered in white flowers.
Messages left by The Associated Press for Lavigne's management company, Nettwerk Management, were not immediately returned Sunday.
The pair began dating in early 2004; they bought a house in Los Angeles later that year. They became engaged in Venice in 2005 while Lavigne was on a European tour.
The singer is working on her third album. She recently voiced the possum Heather in the movie "Over the Hedge."

Katie Holmes : "Suri Is Doing Great... "

Katie Holmes has hit back a rumours she is already expecting her second child with fiancé Tom Cruise.
The former Dawson’s Creek star has rarely been seen in public since giving birth to daughter Suri on April 18.
And one of the couple’s neighbours tells American publication Us Weekly: “I heard from a lot of people that Katie is pregnant.”
Holmes was spotted in Telluride, Colorado, on Monday, where Cruise has a holiday home.
She immediately hit back at the reports telling the magazine: “I am not pregnant again.”
During the star’s outing in Colorado, she was accompanied by a friend and was seen window shopping and sipping a coffee.
Holmes once again did not have her new baby with her, much to the dismay of onlookers.
She told the assembled crowd: “Suri’s doing great! She’s back at the house.”

Vaughniston's Ring Rebuttal and More ...

Last time we checked, the all-important finger on Jennifer Aniston's left hand was not buckling under the crushing weight of a garish, gargantuan sparkler. Still, a month after her rep first denied rumors that Vince Vaughn had coughed up $500,000 for a cornea-zapping, doorknob-size nine-and-a-half-carat canary diamond engagement ring, the jewel jabbering just won't stop.
People is the latest to jump into the fray, with a source telling the magazine that the low-key actor bought the bulky yellow bauble from jeweler Suzy Fabrikant while they were stumping for "The Break-Up" in Europe.
Not surprisingly, flacks for both stars "vehemently deny" engagement talk to the mag, which downplays the alleged rock as "just a little something" Vaughn picked out for Aniston.
But Jen's mouthpiece helpfully adds to Us, which recently claimed the undercover couple have been telling pals they plan to get hitched, "[Fabrikant] must be trying to get press because we know of no such ring. It is really rather a pathetic attempt to get attention -- shame on her!"

Liu, Murphy booked as lead "Detectives"

Tue Jul 11, 1:39 AM ET

Lucy Liu and Cillian Murphy are set to star in the romantic comedy "Watching the Detectives."
Paul Soter, a member of Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind "Super Troopers" and the upcoming "Beerfest," wrote the script and is making his directorial debut on the movie.
"Detectives" centers on a film noir buff (Murphy) whose world is turned upside down when a beautiful, unpredictable femme fatale (Liu) provides far more adventure than he ever experienced -- and possibly more than he can handle.
The project is a production of Toronto-based Peace Arch Entertainment and New York-based Plum Pictures. Peace Arch is co-financing and serving as worldwide distributor. Shooting is due to start this week in New York.
Peace Arch is in postproduction on "Chapter 27," a drama about John Lennon's murderer, Mark David Chapman; the film stars Lindsay Lohan and Jared Leto. Plum is in postproduction on romantic comedy "Dedication," starring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore, and on "Grace Is Gone," a drama toplined by John Cusack.
Liu is best known for her starring turn in the "Charlie's Angels" movies as well as "Kill Bill-Vol. 1." She most recently starred in "Lucky Number Slevin" and next appears in action comedy "The Cleaner" and supernatural thriller "Rise."
Murphy made his name in Danny Boyle's zombie movie "28 Days Later" and has appeared in "Batman Begins" and "Red Eye." He received a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Neil Jordan's "Breakfast on Pluto."

Crowe, Wife Welcome Arrival of Second Son

Jul 7, 6:51 AM EST

The Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia -- Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe's wife Danielle Spencer gave birth to their second child on Friday, his Australian manager said. Tennyson Spencer Crowe was born at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital weighing about 8 pounds, Crowe's manager Grant Vandenberg said.

"Mother, father and baby are doing extremely well," he said.

It is the second child for the celebrity couple, and a brother for their firstborn, 2-year-old Charlie.

Crowe — who won an Oscar for his role in the 2000 film "Gladiator" — married Spencer in a star-studded Australian wedding in 2003.

Crowe, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, had said he planned to be in the delivery room with a video camera when the baby was born.

The 42-year-old actor has said fatherhood changed his life.

"I'm very involved in being a dad," Crowe told the television show "Entertainment Tonight" in May last year. "My days, if they start in the morning with a cuddle from my son, are just so much more glorious than they were prior to that."

Crowe made headlines last year when he was arrested for throwing a phone at a New York hotel concierge. He pleaded guilty to third-degree assault last November and was sentenced to a conditional discharge, meaning he must not get arrested for one year.

Ashley Judd Recalls Treatment

Jul 5, 3:58 PM EST

The Associated Press

Ashley Judd says she spent 47 days in a Texas treatment facility for depression and other emotional problems, in an interview in Glamour magazine.

"I needed help," the 38-year-old actress tells the magazine in its August issue. "I was in so much pain."

Judd, the daughter of country music star Naomi Judd, says she entered the Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap in February for "codependence in my relationships; depression, blaming, raging, numbing, denying and minimizing my feelings."

"But because my addictions were behavioral, not chemical, I wouldn't have known to seek treatment. At Shades of Hope, my behaviors were treated like addictions. And those behaviors were killing me spiritually, the same as someone who is sitting on a corner with a bottle in a brown paper bag."

Judd says she was visiting her sister, singer Wynonna Judd, who was being treated for food addictions.

"When (the counselors) approached me about treatment, they said, `No one ever does an intervention on people like you. You look too good; you're too smart and together. But you (and Wynonna) come from the same family — so you come from the same wound.' No one had ever validated my pain before. It was so profound," she says.

Judd says her childhood was a time of "complete and total chaos." She attended 13 schools in 12 years and lived alternately with her mother, grandmother and father.

As a result, Judd says, she became "a hypervigilant child," striving to be perfect.

"A wonderful pastor once told me, `Perfectionism is the highest order of self-abuse,'" she tells the magazine. "So now I try to remind myself that if I engage in perfectionism, I am abusing myself. Period."

Judd says her relationships, including her marriage to race-car driver Dario Franchitti, have improved.

"It's so simple really: I was unhappy and now I'm happy," she says. "Now, even when I'm having a rough day, it's better than my best day before treatment."

Swank says husband's addiction hurt marriage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank said the breakdown of her eight-year marriage to actor Chad Lowe was partially due to the substance abuse problem he had been battling.
Swank, who won best-actress Oscars for her performance in "Million Dollar Baby" and "Boys Don't Cry," confirmed in May that the couple had decided to end their marriage after separating in January but gave no reason for the split.

Swank told the latest edition of magazine Vanity Fair, which arrived on newsstands on Wednesday, that she was shocked when she found out about Lowe's addiction, which contributed to their marriage's slide.

"I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors," Swank said. "But that just kind of blew it open; it made me look at things a lot deeper.

"It's an enormous obstacle to overcome and he's doing it. He's living a sober life. I know how difficult it is and I'm really proud of his sobriety."

A representative for Lowe had no comment on the report.

Swank, 31, did not give details on what substances were abused by Lowe, who works mostly in television and whose career has been overshadowed by Swank's, as well that of his better-known older brother Rob Lowe.

Swank and Lowe, 38, married in September 1997. She said she initiated the divorce but it ended up being mutual.

Blast On!

Sun Jul 02, 9:35 PM ET
Fiery Fourth-style mailbag to get to, but first, remember how I told you all last week that I didn't buy the bust-up rumors swirling around Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz? Sorta the same way I don't care to swallow this poor-me Tori Spelling bitching (which T.S. is busy peddling) about how she found out her dad passed away via a BlackBerry?

Uh, should the gal who utilized the family therapist to tell her first husband she was leaving him really be one to complain about the insensitive relaying of vital information? Just asking. Back to those adorable surfer sweeties:

I got one of Timberlake's costars from Alpha Dog, Olivia Wilde, to gimme her thoughts on the reported split. This very necessary quizzing went down well at the Spirit of Independence Awards. (Feisty femme Charlize Theron was being honored, but more on that after the holiday!)

"They were definitely closer than any couple I've ever seen in my life when we were making the film," Wilde said. "And he worshipped her. He told me he thought she was his guiding light and his savior." But other mutual pals say that J.T. simply adores the leggy former model perhaps a teensy tad more than she does him?

Back to O., who also told me Justin looks to Cam for overzealous-press pointers, a sure sign of utter dependence, to be sure. "The paparazzi is a really tough thing for (Justin), and he feels like he couldn't get through it without her," Ms. W. explained. Now, remember, Cammie's been known to go ape-crap on pesky photogs, so don't be surprised if Justin starts using her tactics!

Now on to other vitriolic vampings, 'kay, kittens?

Natalie Imbruglia Campaigns For Childbirth Disease Awareness

Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia has lent her support to an awareness campaign for childbirth disease obstetric fistula. The hitmaker has joined forces with the United Nations Population Fund to bring attention to the millions of women who lose their babies and health to the condition in developing countries.
Fistula causes severe tissue damage during extended childbirth, often resulting in infant mortality and embarrassing incontinence in the mother.
Imbruglia, who has visited Africa on several occasions, says, "It just should not be happening, that women cannot safely have a child in this day and age. How can you not be compelled to want to draw attention to this issue? If you could help just one of these women, to me, it is literally giving that woman her life back. That is how I think about it. They need a voice. Nobody wants to talk about being incontinent. These women are suffering in silence. It is shameful for them - you can see it in their faces."

Johny Deep loves creating quirky characters and doesn’t care about box office

In “Dead Man’s Chest,” crafty Jack Sparrow seeks to avoid paying the debt he owes to undersea overlord Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). Sparrow tricks young lovebirds Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley) into helping him, and the three take off on an adventurous escapade that includes fighting sea monsters, infiltrating an island community and searching the watery underworld for the legendary “dead man’s chest.”The film has heart, Nighy says, attributing the appeal of the first “Pirates” movie to Depp’s depiction of Sparrow.
“It must be one of the most popular performances of recent times,” Nighy says. “Not only is [Depp] an assassin in terms of comedy and everything else — he’s a brilliant guy — but he brings to it, and to the movie as a whole, a big-heartedness. It has good spirit.”
Depp has tried to pour his soul into all his performances, he says, whether they were in a tiny independent film or a big-budget blockbuster. Commercial success, while appealing, was not crucial, he says.
“It didn’t make sense to me that you go into work and put as much of yourself and your heart into something, and in the end, all it’s about is how much money it makes at the box office. Eeew,” he says with disgust. “I can’t think that way.”
His movies were “box-office poison,” he says, but “it never felt that way to me.”
“I’m not comfortable saying movies are art,” Depp says. “I don’t know that they can be because there’s so much money involved.”Is ‘Hamlet’ in his future? So it is, he says, he approaches his work from an artistic, not financial, perspective. Box-office receipts “are kind of none of my business,” he says.
“You have to have some sort of legacy in truth and honesty that you leave to your kiddies and the people you love.”
Depp’s two children, with partner Vanessa Paradis, help the actor feel grounded and give him a stable launching point from which to explore his craft.Being a parent, he says, has “given me real foundation, a real strong place to stand — in life, in work, in everything.”
As he looks ahead, Depp says he still hopes to one day take Marlon Brando’s advice, which he relays in a “Godfather” voice: “You ought to play Hamlet while you’re still young enough to do it.”
“The clock’s ticking on that,” Depp says. “There’s only a couple more years that I’ve got, otherwise I’ll be playing Hamlet’s father.”
If he takes on the role, it would be in a “tiny, tiny little theater,” he says.
Or not.
“As careers go, you’ve got your ups, you’ve got your downs, peaks and valleys and all that,” he says. “I may end up doing special appearances at shopping malls as Jack Sparrow. You never know.”

Angelina's Relationship

In early 2005, Jolie found herself in the middle of a well-publicized Hollywood scandal when she was accused of being the "other woman" in the divorce of actors Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. The allegation was that she and Pitt had started an affair during filming of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, in several interviews she has denied starting an affair with Pitt. In an interview with Marie Claire recently, she stated that she could never have a relationship with a married man because she has seen what relationships like that did to her mother. Her father has acknowledged that he cheated on Jolie's mother when they were married. Jolie stated that she "could not look at herself in the mirror" if she had an affair with a married man.
Speculation over the nature of Jolie and Pitt's relationship continued throughout the summer of 2005. On August 22, the Calgary Herald ran a front-page story with a photo of Jolie taken during a surprise visit she made to Calgary, Alberta a couple of days earlier, accompanied by her adopted daughter Zahara. Pitt was at that time filming in Calgary, as was her father, Jon Voight. It was later reported that Jolie and Pitt visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Drumheller, Alberta together,[8] and sources reported in September of 2005 that they had visited the West Edmonton Mall together.[9]
On September 30, the Calgary Sun reported that Pitt and Jolie had rented a house together in the city of Spruce Grove, Alberta, west of Edmonton where Pitt was filming; the same issue printed a photograph of the couple, now dubbed "Brangelina," leaving an Edmonton grocer's.

Angelina ChildrensOn March 10, 2002, Jolie adopted her first child, Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt. He was born on August 5, 2001 as Rath Vibol in Cambodia. On July 5, 2005, People reported that Jolie was in the final stages of adopting a baby girl, who was thought to be orphaned by AIDS, but her mother from Ethiopia didn't have enough money to raise her, through the agency Wide Horizons for Children. Jolie has named her daughter Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt. Zahara was born on January 8, 2005.On May 27, 2006, Jolie gave birth to the couple's third child, a daughter named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, at night at the Cottage Medi-Clinic Hospital in Swakopmund, Namibia. Shiloh was born by a scheduled caesarean section, due to breech presentation, and Pitt was there to cut her umbilical cord. The couple's Los Angeles obstetrician was assisted by local staff. Shiloh, according to a longstanding translation from the Bible, has come to mean "the peaceful one."

Lachey Romance Story

After years of playing second fiddle to his more famous wife, Nick Lachey has found a woman who will supportively cheer from the sidelines as he emotes on stage. Last weekend, as the almost-ex of Jessica Simpson rehearsed his soul-baring ballad "What's Left of Me" in Toronto ahead of his performance at the MuchMusic Video Awards, a "beaming" Vanessa Minnillo stood nearby singing along, reports Us Weekly. "She shouted, 'I loved it!'" an insider tells the mag. "He then gave her a bearhug." The fledgling flames, who in recent weeks have been spotted cozying up in Atlantic City and Cabo San Lucas, later hit a local hotspot, where Vanessa shook her groove thing to Nelly's "Hot in Herre" as Nick looked on. They returned to their hotel in the wee small hours, but were back out the next night, when they got into the Canadian spirit by playing some hockey -- of the tonsil variety -- at another club. "They were fully making out," says a spywitness. "Clearly they were both having a good time." Despite the PDA, "it's not serious yet," according to the mag, which says Vanessa is still seeing sometime squeeze Derek Jeter.

Britney: 'Treat Me Like Julia Roberts'

Britney Spears can’t understand why tabloid reporters have turned on her for reportedly breaking up a romance, while Julia Roberts escaped their wrath for doing exactly the same thing. Speaking on US news show DATELINE last night (15JUN06), the pop superstar revealed she was taken aback by the tabloid attacks levelled at her after she appeared to steal husband Kevin Federline away from his pregnant girlfriend Shar Jackson. Spears maintained she knew nothing about Federline’s romance when she started dating him, and later discovered he and Jackson had separated before he started courting the pop star. Mistakenly thinking Roberts’ husband Danny Moder was a father when he left his wife and started dating the Pretty Woman star, Spears questioned, “That happened with Julia Roberts too but it’s more talked about and more of an issue with me. “Her (Roberts’) husband (Moder) was married and had kids when they first got together, (but) for some reason it’s like, ‘Boom, in your face’ when it happens with me and it’s really none of anybody’s business.” Moder was married to make-up artist Vera Steimberg when he first met Roberts on the set of The Mexican in 2001. They divorced in 2002, only two months before his marriage to the Oscar-winning actres.

Shiloh Sparks First Fashion Trend

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's three-week-old daughter has already made her first fashion statement after appearing on the cover of America's People magazine in a trendy T-shirt. Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt wore a vintage-washed grey cotton T-shirt with the words "The Pots & Pans Band" on her first magazine cover, causing the $42 shirt to immediately fly off store shelves. After the magazine hit newsstands last week, baby boutiques and high-end retailers including Barney's New York, Fred Segal and Bloomingdale's were inundated with telephone calls and Internet orders. The shirt's designer, Kingsley Aarons, claims he was stunned by the response saying, "It just hit me how big a deal this is." Aarons was inspired by his own two-year-old son Zephyr, when the amateur drummer began banging away on pots and pans in the family's kitchen. The designer says other celebrity parents who dress their kids in his shirts include Johnny Depp, Gwen Stefani, Seal and Heidi Klum and Slash from Guns N' Roses. He adds, "Brad and Angelina are definitely our customers. The new generation of young, hip parents are looking for outfits they would wear themselves." Aarons is currently working with the celebrity couple's representatives to send baby T-shirts to Africa to help needy newborns.
